• We’ve discussed pet nutrition and pet supplements as being essential to your pet’s health in other articles, though here we will examine prevention and treatment measures for one pet health issue that we haven’t yet discussed – weight.

Dogs and cats are as susceptible to unhealthy weight gain as we are. Afflicted by the same issues as humans, dogs and cats can also gain weight when depressed or lacking exercise. Making certain that your pet gets enough exercise can help maintain their weight, and their spirits, though overeating can still occur. When a pet gains weight, just a few pounds will have more of an effect on the pet’s health than you would expect. A few pounds gained on a human do not infringe on health like the same weight added a much smaller-framed cat or dog.

Managing your pets’ overeating is much easier in a single-pet home than one shared with multiple animals. If you have a cat and a dog, you may notice that your dog eats your cat food or vice versa. It’s nearly impossible to feed two pets at different times from one another, especially when the pet has a demonstrated inclination to eat their flat-mate’s pet food. One option is to contain one pet while the other eats and vice versa, though this is a rather heart-wrenching option for both pet and owner.

If your pet is experiencing a weight problem a talk with your vet may be in order. With him or her you can discuss prescription diet options as well as pet supplements that help curb hunger. Remember first to consider whether your pet is getting enough exercise. If adding a little extra physical activity doesn’t help with your pet’s boredom-driven binge eating then at the very least your pet will have the opportunity to work off some of the extra calories that present a harm to their health.
